National Lifelong Learning Institute

National Lifelong Learning Institute (former Academia Istropolitana) was established by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic in 1990 as an directly managed organization by the Ministry in order to promote the implemetation of the European Council international programs in tpostgraduate education of Slovak experts in engaging Slovakia into European structures.

The former name Academia Istropolitana has its origin in the name of the first university in Slovakia, which was founded in 1465 by King Matthias Corvinus. Academia Istropolitana existed only 25 years, but in the history of education in our country it was a major milestone.

Since 1992 five years of international daily post graduate study programs took place on the ground of former Academia Istropolitana. Results of institution ranked Academia Istropolitana among the best educational institution in Central and Eastern Europe. Twice in a row, Institution got shortlisted for the prestigious Hannah Arendt award, awarded by the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.

Main aim of former Academia Istropolitana was providing further education for the employees of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic, employees of other central government bodies and developing cooperation with the countries of European union and countries in Central and Eastern Europe through international programs. Institution administrated common documentation workplace together with the Council of Europe. It also administrated library containing programs, standards and other materials of the Council and foreign literature for the needs of state authorities, municipalities, associations, universities, other educational institutions, Slovak academy of sciences and professionals.

Academia Istropolitana was renamed the National Lifelong learning institute (NLLI) on 14 May 2010.

Besides of default aims of organization, National lifelong learning institute performs tasks associated with the implementation of National strategy for lifelong learning and lifelong guidance and tasks associated with transfer of innovation in to the educational policies in Slovakia.
